Brighton Resort: A historic benchmark for MND Safety

Brighton Resort, located in the breathtaking Big Cottonwood Canyon (Utah, USA), is a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. With an average annual snowfall of 12 meters and record highs reaching 25 meters, avalanche management is a top priority to ensure the safety of skiers and on-site professionals. Since 2005, the installation of the Gazex system, designed and manufactured by MND, has transformed avalanche risk management operations in the challenging Millicent Bowl area.

An evolution in avalanche control systems

Since the 1980s, Brighton Resort has adapted its methods to tackle complex snow conditions and challenging terrain. After using 75 mm recoilless rifles and Avalaunchers in the 1990s, the resort made a technological leap in 2005 by installing Gazex exploders. This system has significantly reduced risks for the teams and maximized operational efficiency.

A case study: the avalanche of December 13, 2008

In December 2008, Brighton’s winter season began with heavy snowfall followed by periods of intense cold. By December 12, despite two consecutive days of Avalauncher shots and manual charges, the control teams observed apparent snow stability but remained aware of a latent risk.

On the morning of December 13, following an additional 50 cm of snowfall, the teams activated the Gazex exploders. Within minutes, a major avalanche occurred, clearing the fragile accumulated layers and stabilizing the snowpack for the rest of the season. Unlike in previous years, no direct intervention in exposed terrain was required, thereby preserving the safety of the teams.

This event highlights how Gazex redefined avalanche safety operations at Brighton by significantly reducing risks and closure times while improving skier access.

Sustainable and secure management

With nearly 20 seasons of use, the Gazex system continues to prove its reliability and effectiveness. Brighton Resort has implemented a proactive maintenance strategy to ensure optimal operability. The updates planned for 2025, including integration with the Safety-cs control system, highlight the resort’s commitment to innovation and safety.

A collaboration dedicated to mountain safety

Brighton Resort is a concrete example of the positive impact of MND solutions on mountain risk management. The installation of Gazex has transformed not only avalanche control operations but also the guest experience and working conditions for the teams. This collaboration highlights the importance of a strategic partnership in addressing the unique challenges of modern mountain resorts.
