To support its four-season development, Massanutten Resort in Virginia, USA has chosen the French manufacturer MND, a specialist in high-thrill leisure infrastructures, to equip itself with a new recreational activity – a monorail coaster. This installation aims to enhance the resort’s offerings by providing its guests with an unforgettable experience throughout the year, combining breathtaking views of the Shenandoah Valley with unique thrills thanks to the many banked turns along the ride. For MND, this is the first dual-seat monorail coaster (named “Fun Coaster”) to be deployed in the United States. This milestone allows the French company to showcase its expertise in a market that is now among the largest in the world.
With a total length of one kilometer (3,380 feet), the “Mountain Mayhem” monorail coaster offers an exhilarating descent featuring two 360-degree spirals. Its innovative design allows riders to have full control over their speed, delivering a personalized experience tailored to each guest’s preferences. Whether seeking a high-adrenaline adventure or a more leisurely ride to soak in the incredible views, ”Mountain Mayhem” can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph), or slower thanks to its manual braking system.
Developed to optimize both thrills and comfort, ”Mountain Mayhem” features specially designed dual-seat vehicles with an elevated seating position – a one-of-a-kind model – ensuring an authentic experience of speed and descent. The aerodynamic design of the coaster cars incorporates ergonomic considerations to guarantee comfort from boarding to arrival, along with safety features such as seat belts. Designed to adapt to all types of environments and destinations, each client can customize the coaster’s body with a wide range of options provided by MND. Passenger safety is ensured by seat belts, bumpers, and an automatic braking system. Each coaster car can accommodate two passengers with a maximum combined weight of 158 kg (348 lbs). To ensure everyone’s safety, solo riders must be at least 13 years old, though the activity remains family-friendly, with children as young as 4 allowed to ride with an adult.
“Year after year, MND is establishing itself as a major international player in the high-thrill leisure market. We have already completed several impressive projects, such as the world’s largest pylon-supported zipline in Chamrousse (France), as well as a high-thrill adventure park featuring multiple aerial courses and a Skywalk over 300 meters (984 feet) above the ground in the breathtaking Canton Tower (China). We are delighted to have built this monorail coaster for Massanutten Resort. I would like to once again thank them for their trust. Design, comfort, and safety are integral parts of this monorail coaster” stated Xavier Gallot-Lavallée, President of MND.
“We are thrilled to introduce « Mountain Mayhem » to our guests at Massanutten Resort, further enhancing our offering of exceptional year-round experiences. Partnering with MND has allowed us to bring this innovative monorail coaster to Virginia, blending exhilarating thrills with panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley. Whether speeding through thrilling 360-degree spirals or enjoying a more relaxed ride, « Mountain Mayhem » promises an unforgettable adventure for families and thrill-seekers alike. We look forward to welcoming our guests to experience this exciting addition firsthand.” said Kameron Tucker, Mountain Sports Director at Massanutten Resort.
