NATURAL HAZARD AND AVALANCHE RISK PREVENTION: MND STRENGTHENS ITS POSITION AS A GLOBAL LEADER

Thanks to its numerous innovations, the Savoie-based group MND has established itself over the past twenty years as the global leader in avalanche risk prevention and control. It has recently secured new contracts in Canada, the United States, Chile, Argentina, and Norway.

Major projects across five continents

In Canada, MND is securing the access road to the Brucejack gold mine, located in the northwestern mountains of British Columbia. This 76-kilometer road, which crosses the Knipple Glacier, must remain operational year-round, 24/7, regardless of weather conditions. MND SAFETY is installing a Gazex system to protect the critical sections of the route. Operator NEWMONT, through its local distributor AVATEK, chose MND for the proven reliability and autonomy of its 13 Gazex units, perfectly suited to extreme environments.

In the United States, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), responsible for the state’s road network, has renewed its contract with MND for another three years. Starting this summer, six old Gazex systems will be replaced in the Tahoe Valley region.

In Chile, at the CODELCO – Los Bronces copper mine site, MND SAFETY is upgrading the communication systems of around forty Gazex units. The new setup includes satellite connectivity with redundancy via 18 satellites, ensuring secure communication between control centers and the SAFET-Cs web platform. Another installation is also underway at over 3,000 meters above sea level, at the CODELCO Div. Andina mine.

In Argentina, at the Las Leñas ski resort, located 800 kilometers from Buenos Aires, MND is upgrading an existing Gazex installation between 2,200 and 3,430 meters in altitude. The work will be completed before the winter season opening scheduled for June 27.

In Norway, MND has won a public tender to secure a strategic road on Arnøya Island, in a Sami region in the north of the country. The installation includes 24 removable O’BellX® units, along with a radar and a weather station. This system protects a route now frequented by ski touring enthusiasts. The contract also includes operation and maintenance of the site for five years, renewable in five-year increments.

Global expertise, made in France

To date, more than 3,000 MND SAFETY systems have been installed in 22 countries, protecting industrial sites, railways, roads, ski areas, and mountain villages. In France, the Chamonix Valley is notably equipped to secure access to the Mont-Blanc tunnel. All MND products are designed, assembled, and manufactured in France, in Sainte-Hélène-du-Lac, Savoie. They benefit from numerous patented protections.

One of the key advantages of MND SAFETY systems lies in their operational safety. Containing no explosives, they are activated remotely using gas mixtures, eliminating the need for dangerous handling or human intervention in avalanche zones. Operable 24/7 and in all weather conditions, they generate one or more explosions above the snowpack to trigger avalanches preventively.
